Lesson: Three Note 7th Chords

Hello and welcome back to Chord Chemistry. In this lesson we will study three note 7th chords. In a three note 7th chord, we omit the 5th of the chord. We will only play the root, 3rd, and 7th of the chord. Playing 7th chords in this manner is often recommended when playing with another chordal instrument such as a piano or another guitarist. This way the voicing of the chord, and it's tensions and embellishments, will not clash with the other instruments. It also allows the soloist complete freedom, melodically, to create any kind of colors or tensions he or she wishes. When playing chords in this manner, you are getting only the essential notes.
